Sackville swimmers join the East Grinstead Swimathon
On Saturday 16th November, East Grinstead Swimming Club took part in a swimathon. Inspired by celebrities such as Linford Christie and Alex Brooker, from the programme SUTC – Sink or Swim, a group of swimmers decided to challenge themselves by swimming the equivalent of the 21 miles it takes to cross the English Channel.
The swim was to raise funds for Cancer Research. The Kings Centre kindly donated a lane, and 20 swimmers including Sackville students Lilly Hill, Sophia Wigmore, Amy Grantham, Sophie Taylor, Jessica and Chloe Greenwood, gave up their Saturday afternoon to swim the huge distance.
And they smashed it, with 45 minutes to spare! So of course they wanted to stretch their challenge and went on to swim 26 miles (the distance of a marathon). They still needed to be bribed out the pool with the promise of some well deserved cake – baked, bought and donated by parents and family.
Online fundraising along with donations made from selling cakes have raised over £3200 so far. Donations are still being accepted on our just giving page https://fundraise. cancerresearchuk.org/team/ east-grinstead-swimming-clubs- team
