CURRICULUM INTENT

“Learning through and about the arts enriches the experience of studying while at school as well as preparing students for life after school. Arts subjects encourage self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as a sense of individual identity. Studying arts subjects also help to develop critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around us.” https://www.tate.org.uk/art/talking-point/why-study-art#:~:text=Learning%20through%20and%20about%20the,a%20sense%20of%20individual%20identity

Our intent is for students to:

  • Acquire an appreciation, enjoyment and love of art
  • Develop a positive attitude towards all of the arts
  • Demonstrate awareness of art across the curriculum and the wider world
  • Develop personal qualities including: perseverance, independent thinking, self-confidence, co-operation and open mindedness

Our hope is for students to be creative risk-takers, leaders, organised and passionate young adults when they leave Sackville School.

CURRICULUM RATIONALE

‘I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.’ Georgia O’Keeffe

A school art department is a world of its own. Students devise innovative & creative projects which do justice to their ideas. The energy these young people generate as they make drawings or design a product is an inspiration.

They produce work of great personality and strength of character, often dealing with themes that touch all of our lives. (Ms Buckley)

Art embodies creativity. At Sackville our aim is to instil in students an appreciation of aesthetics, and an awareness of how creativity, and technical mastery can go hand in hand. We aim to provide opportunities to practise and develop the skills required to respond to the world around them creatively and expressively.

Through photography, drawing, painting, textiles, printing and sculpture, students can create a variety of images and objects expressing their personal ideas. We want our students to be able to demonstrate understanding through their use of materials and inspiration from artists, photographers, designers and craftspeople, while producing visually exciting works of art.
