Emotional Wellbeing

In School Support

We are fortunate to have a large number of staff who are specifically trained to support students’ wellbeing.

The School Counselling Service   Mental Health First Aid – MHFA

We have a permanent lead counsellor, Eunice, at Sackville and a number of other counsellors on placement with us. Counsellors on placement work under the direct supervision and guidance of Eunice.

Our School Counselling Service offers additional personal support to students who may benefit from working with a professional counsellor.

You can see our policy here.

Mental Health First Aid teaches people how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and emotional distress. It also provides skills to use to support an individual and promote self-help and self-care. Alongside, mental health first aiders signpost to external and professional help much like physical first aiders do.

At Sackville we have 32 trained staff in MHFA and a handful of students. We also have an in-house MHFA instructor; the number of people trained in our community grows each year.

Learning Mentor

Learning Mentors offer support and guidance to students who experience difficulties with their learning. They work one-to-one with students to help them identify what is it that is impacting their ability to engage with school. This could be due to struggles with social, emotional or behavioural problems that affect a student’s ability to learn.

Our Learning Mentor, Mrs Tocher, works with our primary feeder schools to ensure a smoother transition for those who find the step up to secondary school more daunting than others.

Mrs Tocher also runs The BASE where some of our most at risk or anxious students may need to spend some time.
